When Should I Suspect RSV in My Baby?

The weather is cooling down, the holidays are right around the corner, and cold and flu season is ramping up! Getting sick is never on anyone’s to-do list, but this time of year is the perfect environment for multiple illnesses to thrive.

One illness that you need to watch out for in your home is respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. This virus has the potential to make your infant or small child really sick and it can even be deadly.

If your baby is starting to experience a runny nose or mild congestion, keep a close eye on him or her. Read on to learn about the symptoms to watch out for below from our AFC Urgent Care Ballantyne!

How Is a Baby’s Body Affected by RSV?

RSV affects the lungs and other breathing passages in the body. Like any virus, it can cause irritation and inflammation at the site of the infection. This resulting irritation is what causes mild cold symptoms in most adults who get the virus.

But cold-like symptoms may just be the beginning of a much larger issue for your infant or baby. The airways and lungs of a small child are so tiny that any type of irritation or inflammation can be really dangerous. This is why it is recommended to keep a close eye on any developing or worsening symptoms and take action right away.

Signs That RSV Is Getting Worse

  • Flaring nostrils while breathing
  • Belly breathing
  • Wheezing or coughing
  • Fever that won’t go away

When Should I Seek Medical Attention for RSV?

It is not a guarantee that a baby will become really ill if he or she contracts RSV. It may resolve quickly within a week without any major symptoms! However, it could turn serious very quickly if your infant is having trouble breathing.

If your child is struggling to take a proper breath, he or she may be taking quick, rapid intakes of air or may have a bluish or gray color to their skin and lips. Any time you suspect respiratory distress, it should be treated as an emergency and you should seek medical support immediately.

Preventing an RSV Infection This Season

  • Don’t kiss your baby while you are sick.
  • Wash your hands.
  • Don’t let others kiss your baby.
  • Cover your sneeze or cough.
