What Body Temperature Indicates a Fever?

With so many illnesses circulating about, chances are either you or someone in your household has been sick recently. While all these illnesses can produce different symptoms, one common symptom is a fever.

Our bodies naturally experience fevers in order to fight against infection and are actually working to help you feel better! Our AFC Urgent Care Ballantyne team explains the benefits of fevers below, so keep reading.

How Does a Fever Help You Heal?

In adults, a typical body temperature is 98.6 degrees. Since your body temperature naturally fluctuates throughout the day, the official fever diagnosis isn’t until your body reaches 100.4 degrees or higher. When your body develops a fever, it means that your body has recognized an invader and is working to create a less-than-ideal environment for that invader to grow.

A higher body temperature encourages your white blood cells to work more effectively while inhibiting the growth and reproductive rate of your current infection. Cool, right? While a fever may be an unpleasant symptom, it actually means that your body is healthy and responding to illness the right way.

What a Fever Feels Like

  • Elevated body temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher
  • Chills, shivering or shaking
  • Body aches
  • Fatigue
  • Sweating or flushed skin

Do I Have to be Worried About a Fever?

In most cases, fevers are minor inconveniences and will resolve on their own once your body starts to fight off the infection. If your fever will not fade away on its own or if it keeps climbing and reaches 103 degrees or higher, visit with your care provider right away.

While it is rare, extremely high fevers that go unresolved can eventually lead to organ damage or even brain damage. Thankfully, rest, fluids and some OTC fever-reducing medication can help you feel better quickly for minor fevers. In time, your symptoms should resolve and you can get back to your normal life!

Signs of a More Serious Fever

  • Stiff neck
  • Confusion
  • Rash accompanying a high fever
  • Seizures
  • Dehydration
