How Serious Is a Flu Fever?- AFC Urgent Care

The flu is certainly not fun to experience. You will almost certainly feel terrible, tired and achey. Plus, you will most likely have a fever if you do get sick with the flu.

Our AFC Urgent Care Ballantyne team goes on to highlight the severity of flu symptoms below, so keep reading!

What Is the Flu?

The flu is caused by the influenza virus, which attacks your respiratory system, including the lungs, nose and throat. The flu typically doesn’t cause serious complications, but older adults, young children, people with compromised immune systems and pregnant women are at a higher risk of developing serious complications.

The flu is much more common during the winter months. We’ve listed some symptoms to be aware of below.

Common Flu Symptoms

  • Fever
  • Aches and pains throughout the body
  • Headaches
  • Chills
  • Sore throat
  • An extreme feeling of fatigue
  • A persistent and worsening cough
  • Stuffy or runny nose

If I Get a Fever, Is It Serious?

Usually, no. Although most “flu fevers” are over 100ºF, they won’t be a huge cause for concern if dealt with quickly and correctly.

Even if you don’t have a fever after testing positive for the flu, it’s important to take this virus seriously. If you get sick with the flu, we’ve listed some things you need to do below.

What to Do If You Get the Flu

  • Wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of the virus. Aim to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds each time.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with your arm.
  • Drink lots of water to stay hydrated.
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Stay home until you feel better.
